Well done Jairam!

Click to send a fax to Jairam Ramesh

First let's say a big thank you to environment and forest minister Jairam Ramesh for trashing the unscientific report supporting Bt brinjal published by the inter-academy of sciences.[1] By rejecting this report and punishing Vedanta [2] he has shown that he is capable of taking decisions which reflect what people want.

He needs to do the same in the case of the Dhamra port in Orissa, which according to the regional office of his own ministry violates the Forest Conservation Act. Strangely, the central ministry at Delhi has contradicted its regional office by giving a clean chit to the port in front of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) hearing this case.[3] The ministry has given no explanation for this contradiction.

The fragile ecology and fisheries of the area, the mangrove forests and crocodiles of the Bhitarkanika National Park and the Olive Ridley sea turtles need the minister to act.

Can you fax Mr. Jairam Ramesh asking him to stand by the report of his own regional office and implement the law impartially?

Public disapproval of Bt brinjal and Vedanta made him act against them. Some of us have already sent him an e-mail about this issue. A fax asking him to take action will help show the depth of public sentiment against the Dhamra project.

The ministry never acted on reports submitted by its regional office in Bhubaneshwar, and now it has submitted an affidavit to the CEC contradicting its own office and giving a clean chit to the Dhamra port and its powerful backers – TATA and L&T.

The minister needs to explain this internal contradiction and take a just stand to save our environment. While the first phase of the port is almost built, the company is already planning to expand further with more dangerous cargo such as oil, posing an even greater threat to the area.

Send a fax to Jairam Ramesh and ask him not to bow to corporate pressure and to stand by the report of his own Regional Office.
